Understanding Sleep
Sleep is a naturally recurring state of mind and body characterized by altered consciousness, reduced sensory activity, and inhibition of muscular activity.
The Sleep Cycle
A typical sleep cycle consists of several stages:
- Stage 1: Light sleep, transition between wakefulness and sleep
- Stage 2: Deeper sleep, decreased heart rate and body temperature
- Stage 3: Deep sleep, crucial for physical restoration
- REM Sleep: Rapid Eye Movement sleep, important for mental restoration
Common Sleep Disorders
Insomnia
Difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or both.
Sleep Apnea
Breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep.
Restless Leg Syndrome
Uncomfortable sensations in the legs and an irresistible urge to move them.
